President Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth on Good Friday, April 14th, 1865. He died approximately nine hours after being shot in the early morning of April 15th in a house across the street from the theater.
The Lincoln's were attending a performance of "Our American Cousin". They invited General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant. The Grant's were unable to attend and at the last minute the Lincoln's invited Clara Harris and her fiancee Major Henry Reed Rathbone. Rathbone suffered a knife wound during a struggle with John Wilkes Booth but survived.
Tragedy continued to follow Harris and Rathbone. They married but in 1883 Rathbone killed his wife Clara and then turned a knife on himself. He survived was declared insane and died in 1911 in an asylum in Germany.
Mary Todd Lincoln lived a tragic life. Her husband was assassinated while sitting next to her and three of her four sons died before her. In her final years, Mary Todd Lincoln was estranged from her only remaining son, Robert. She died at her sister's home in 1882.
