June 17th and 18th, 2016

Whiskey Flats RV Park, Nevada
Las Vegas, Nevada
Hoover Dam
Boulder City, Nevada

Whiskey Flats RV park is a nice place to stay for a day or two.  The weather is crisp and the RV park very nice.

The park was full of eggs......reptile eggs and Killdeer eggs. Both great examples of amniotic eggs, which is an evolutionary adaptation that freed up reptiles, birds and mammals from having to reproduce in or near water.

The Las Vegas Strip

Of course a tour of the Las Vegas strip is required anytime you are within a 30 mile radius of Vegas.   Caylin fell in love with the lights and energy of the strip.  She was ready to bungee from the Stratosphere.  Unfortunately, that will have to wait for another trip.
The strip, designated as an "All-American Road" and "Scenic Route" at night, is approximately 4 miles in length and is actually located outside of the city of Las Vegas in the towns of Paradise and Winchester.  The strip has over 62,000 hotel rooms.

The Hoover Dam

Built between 1931 and 1936, Hoover Dam, was once known as Boulder Dam.  It is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado river at the border of Nevada and Arizona. Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the bridge in September of 1935.

Hoover Dam created Lake Mead which is the largest reservoir by volume in the United States. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona and California .

You can still drive across Hoover Dam after going through a safety checkpoint or you can take the scenic Hoover Bypass Bridge which opened in October 2010.

I highly recommend stopping at the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge Visitor Center and taking the pedestrian walkway across the bridge.

Boulder City, Nevada

Boulder City was founded and originally built in 1931 by the Bureau of Reclamation and Six Companies, Inc. as housing for workers who were building the dam.  Boulder City is exceptionally rare as a town fully planned under government supervision.

There was an emphasis on clean living in Boulder.  Alcohol and gambling was prohibited.  Gambling is still prohibited there today.

In 2009, Money Magazine listed Boulder as the 6th best place to retire.

Reptile eggs of some sort

Killdeer doing the "Broken Wing" Act trying to lead me away from their nest.  Both parents were actively participating in the charade and were very noisily tweeting and chirping

Four very well camouflaged eggs.
The nest was in the RV parking lot.
Someone put a cone near it which will hopefully protect it.
