Seattle to San Francisco via Astoria and Cannon Beach, Oregon

Seattle to San Francisco by way
of Astoria, Oregon and Cannon Beach, Oregon

June 10, 2016

Astoria, Oregon, near the confluence of the Columbia River with the Pacific Ocean, is named for the American investor John Jacob Astor and was the winter encampment for the Corps of Discovery from December 1805 to March 1806,  Fort Clatsop.  The National Park Service has constructed a replica of the Fort.

Astoria is also home to the Astoria Tower, built in 1926, it is a concrete and steel structure that is 125 feet tall on top of a 600 foot hill.  An observation deck can be reached by climbing 164 steps up a spiral staircase.

Astoria has served as a port of entry for over a century and currently serves as a trading center for the lower Columbia basin.

Tourism, art, and light manufacturing are the main economic sources of Astoria.  Logging and fishing, including sport fishing, also remain but at a much reduced level than in the past. Microbreweries and pubs can be found throughout the town.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a must-see!  You will discover the stories of the legendary Columbia River Bar which is one of the most dangerous passages in the world.  You can also tour Lightship Columbia.
