Seattle to San Francisco- Bridge to Bridge Harbor Tour, Coit Tower, Muir Woods, Sunset on Baker Beach

June 15, 2016

Muir Woods or the Redwood Forest, was established in 1908, and is just 12 miles north of San Francisco.

Originally purchased by U.S. Congressman William and Elizabeth Kent from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company for $45,000 with the goal of protecting the redwoods and the mountain above them.  In 1907, another water company threatened to dam Redwood Creek and flood the area.  Kent objected and when they threatened to take him to court, he donated the land to the federal government.  He wrote to President Theodore Roosevelt asking him to declare it a National Monument.  On January 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument, the first to be created from land donated by a private individual.

The suggested name for the monument was the Kent Monument, but William Kent insisted that it be named after the naturalist John Muir, whose environmental campaigns helped establish the National Park System.

The Golden Gate Bridge-  Construction Began on the Golden Gate Bridge in 1933 and was completed in 1937. Until 1964 it was the longest suspension bridge main span in the world at 4,200 feet.

The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait, a one mile wide, three mile long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge or Bay Bridge-
Completed six months before the Golden Gate Bridge was finished the Bay Bridge spans San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland.  It has two decks which originally carried cars on its upper deck and trucks and trains on the lower deck. Now it carries westbound traffic on the upper deck and eastbound traffic on the lower deck..

Most Reproduction of the Redwoods occurs asexually in
a process known as cloning from a burl.
Redwoods produced asexually grown in a circle, known as a Family Circle.

A Burl.  This one is odd because of how
high up it is. Usually they are near the ground and the root system

These plants fold in bright sunlight...
see the next picture of them in the shade
